Get in touch
DeDuper is free and open source, maintained in my spare time. I read every message — email is best for help, GitHub for bugs and feature requests.

For setup help, questions, or anything that doesn't fit a bug report. I usually reply within a couple of days.

Most questions come down to one of these. If yours isn't here, get in touch.
"DeDuper can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer"
Right-click (or Control-click) the DeDuper app and choose Open, then click Open in the dialog. This is a one-time step for apps distributed outside the Mac App Store — macOS remembers your choice afterward.
DeDuper can't see my photos / no photos found
macOS gates access to your library. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos and turn on DeDuper, then relaunch the app. For scanning a local folder, grant access when prompted — or add DeDuper under Privacy & Security → Files and Folders / Full Disk Access.
Scanning is slow or looks stuck
The first scan of a large library takes longest — DeDuper builds a perceptual hash for every photo. Progress can pause on big videos or RAW files. Leave it running; subsequent scans are much faster. If it never finishes, email me with your library size and macOS version.
It flagged too many — or too few — duplicates
Tune the sensitivity (conservative, balanced, or aggressive) and the time window (default 30 seconds) in settings. Conservative flags only near-identical shots taken moments apart; aggressive casts a wider net. Favorites and any albums you mark as protected are never touched.
I deleted photos I wanted to keep
Nothing is permanently erased. Photos removed from your Apple Photos library go to the Recently Deleted album, recoverable for 30 days; files removed from a local folder go to the Trash. To decide before anything is removed at all, turn on Hold for review — DeDuper then moves flagged photos to a review album instead of deleting them.
How do I update DeDuper?
Download the latest .dmg from the GitHub releases page and drag it over the old copy in Applications. Your settings and protected albums normally carry over.
Is my data private?
Yes. DeDuper has no network access — your photos and their metadata never leave your device. Grouping, scoring, and close-call resolution all run on-device. There are no accounts, no uploads, and no tracking. You can verify this yourself in the open source.
