Ingredients

Flour tortillas 2, 8-inch pack flat against your back panel
Precooked shelf-stable bacon 4 slices the boxed kind, no refrigeration until opened
Baby lettuce a handful
Grape tomatoes 4
Mayo packets 2 grab them from a deli counter in town
Avocado 1 small buy it firm, eat it day two
Salt and pepper a pinch

Method

  1. Lay a tortilla flat on your pack lid so it does not tear.
  2. Squeeze a mayo packet down the middle and spread it with the back of your spoon.
  3. Halve the tomatoes with a knife or your thumbnail. Pile on lettuce, tomato, and two bacon slices.
  4. For the second wrap, skip the mayo and mash the avocado straight onto the tortilla instead. Salt it hard, then add the rest of the bacon.
  5. Roll tight, fold one end, eat standing up.

This is a first-day-out-of-town lunch and nothing else. Lettuce, tomato, and avocado are all day-one food in warm weather, so plan to eat both wraps within about twenty-four hours of the resupply. The bacon is the exception: precooked shelf-stable bacon sold in a box holds unrefrigerated for a week, which is why it also works as a resupply-box item.

Tortillas carry the calories and survive the pack better than bread as long as they lie flat. Mayo packets are the cheap fat here, and the avocado does the same job on the second wrap with more body. Both wraps are heavier per calorie than a dinner bag, which is the whole point of eating them early.

Packing

Lettuce and tomatoes go inside your cook pot with the lid on. Nothing else in the pack keeps them from being crushed. Bacon and mayo packets ride in the lid pocket where you can reach them without unpacking anything.

Variations

  • Swap bacon for a foil packet of tuna or salmon if you cannot find the shelf-stable kind.
  • Instant refried bean flakes rehydrated with cold water make the same wrap without the town stop.
  • A ranch packet and reconstituted meatless nuggets is the same idea with different weight.
