Calorie and protein figures are my own estimates, good enough for planning a food bag and not meant as precise nutrition data.

Ingredients

Boil-in-bag or precooked rice 1 pouch
Shelf-stable curry 1 pouch Japanese retort curry or an Indian ready meal

Method

  1. Get about 800 ml of water boiling.
  2. Drop the rice pouch in and boil eight to ten minutes, or whatever the pouch says.
  3. Put the curry pouch into the same water for the last five minutes.
  4. Lift both out, cut them open, and pour the curry over the rice.

At 40 calories an ounce this is the least efficient thing in the library, and it does not care, because the water it is boiled in is the only thing that gets dirty. Nothing touches a pot.

Worth carrying on the day you know you will arrive late and cold, when the real constraint is willingness to cook rather than pack weight.

Packing

Nothing to repack, which is the entire point. The pouches are heavy for what they hold, so this is a boat or trailhead dinner, not a fifth-day one.

Variations

  • A foil packet of chicken stirred in adds about 20 g of protein for an ounce.
  • The rice pouch reheats fine in the curry pouch's water on a second night.
