Ingredients
| Irish whiskey | 1 1/2 cups | the cheap bottle, not the good one |
|---|---|---|
| Sweetened condensed milk | 1 14 oz can | not the fat-free kind, it stays thin |
| Whole milk powder | 3/4 cup | stands in for the whipping cream |
| Cold water | 1 1/4 cups | |
| Instant coffee | 1 tbsp | |
| Chocolate syrup | 1 tbsp | cocoa powder plus a spoon of sugar also works |
| Vanilla extract | 1 tsp | |
| Almond extract | 1/2 tsp |
Method
- Put the milk powder and instant coffee in a wide-mouth bottle. Add the cold water and shake until there are no dry lumps left on the bottom.
- Add the condensed milk, chocolate syrup, vanilla, and almond extract. Shake again, thirty seconds, until the color is even.
- Pour in the whiskey and shake once more, gently. Hard shaking makes foam that takes an hour to fall.
- Stand the bottle in a creek or a snowbank for twenty minutes. It thickens as it chills.
- Shake before every pour. It separates in a few hours and that is normal.
The original is a blender drink with raw egg and two cartons of whipping cream, which is three problems at once in camp. The egg is out on principle. The cream is replaced by whole milk powder rebuilt with cold water, which gets you the fat and the body without anything that has to stay at 38 degrees. Condensed milk does the rest of the heavy lifting: it is already sweet, already thick, and the can keeps unopened for a year in a bin.
Shake, do not stir, and do not overdo it. The milk powder needs real agitation to hydrate or you will find grit at the bottom of the last glass, but once the whiskey goes in, hard shaking just whips air into it. Alcohol and sugar make this keep for a few days in a cool bottle. Without the whiskey it is a one-day drink.
Packing
Measure the milk powder, coffee, and any dry sugar into one zip bag at home. The condensed milk can and the whiskey ride as they are. Mix in a one-liter bottle you can seal and shake.
Variations
- Skip the whiskey and add another half cup of water for a version the whole camp can drink.
- A spoonful over hot instant coffee in the morning is the best use of what is left.
