Ingredients

Peach herbal tea bag 1 any brand, no need for the expensive one
Mint herbal tea bag 1 peppermint or spearmint
Powdered lemonade 1 packet stands in for the carton of Simply Lemonade
Honey 1 tbsp a squeeze packet or two

Method

  1. Boil 400 ml of water. Drop both tea bags straight into the pot and pull it off the heat.
  2. Steep four minutes. Longer is fine with herbal tea; it will not turn bitter the way black tea does.
  3. Fish out the bags and squeeze them against the pot wall with your spoon.
  4. Stir in the lemonade powder, then the honey. Taste and add more honey if it is sharper than you want.

The coffee-shop version pours in bottled lemonade, which is mostly water and glass. Powdered lemonade does the same job at a fraction of the weight, and you are already boiling water anyway. Two tea bags in 400 ml is a deliberately strong steep, because the lemonade and honey both dilute what you started with.

This is not food. It is 130 calories and no protein, and it earns its place in the bag for other reasons: warm liquid before bed, something to hold in cold hands, and a sore throat that stops being the only thing you think about. Honey coats; mint numbs a little. Both are doing more than the flavor suggests.

Packing

Tea bags, lemonade packet, and honey packets in one small bag. The whole thing weighs almost nothing, so carry two rounds.

Variations

  • A splash of whiskey turns it into a hot toddy.
  • Swap the honey for brown sugar to make it vegan.
  • Grated ginger, carried dried, adds heat if your throat is the problem.
