Ingredients
| Powdered orange drink mix | 2 tbsp | the sweetened kind, not a diet packet |
|---|---|---|
| Sparkling wine | 1 split (187 ml) | screw cap or a can, not a cork |
| Cold water | 240 ml | |
| Dried orange slices | 2 | optional, for the look |
Method
- Stir the drink mix into 240 ml of cold water in a bottle until no powder is sitting on the bottom. Do this first.
- Let it sit five minutes in a creek or a snowbank if you have one. Warm mimosa is a punishment.
- Pour half the juice into each cup, then top slowly with the sparkling wine. It will foam over if you rush.
- Drop a dried orange slice in each cup and drink it before the bubbles quit.
This is a brunch drink dragged outside. The real version is orange juice and sparkling wine, and neither travels: juice needs a cooler, and a full bottle of anything is a bad thing to carry. Powdered drink mix solves the first problem and a 187 ml split solves the second. One split makes two honest cups.
Mix the powder into plain water before the wine goes anywhere near it. Powder dumped into carbonation foams up and out of the cup, and you lose both the drink and the bubbles. Cold matters more than it seems here — the mix tastes flat and syrupy warm, and the wine goes dull within a minute of leaving the shade.
Packing
Drink mix goes in a small zip bag inside the cup. The split rides upright in a side pocket; a cork will work itself loose in a pack, so buy the screw cap or the can.
Variations
- Swap the orange mix for powdered lemonade and add a pinch of dried mint.
- Skip the wine and use half the water for a cold, strong electrolyte-adjacent breakfast drink.
- A splash of hot water instead of cold, no wine, makes it a passable morning warmer in the cold.
