Ingredients

Orange drink powder enough for 8 oz unsweetened crystals or a real juice powder, not a sugar-free packet
Cold water 1 cup / 240 ml reconstitutes the juice
Sparkling wine one 375 ml split prosecco or cava; a split is easier to chill and finish than a full bottle

Method

  1. Bury the split in the cooler the night before. Warm sparkling wine foams over and goes flat in the cup.
  2. Mix the drink powder into 1 cup of cold water in a bottle. Shake and let it sit a minute so nothing is gritty.
  3. Pour the juice into two cups first, filling each about halfway.
  4. Open the split slowly, tilted, and top each cup to the rim. Juice first, wine second, or you get foam instead of a drink.
  5. Drink it now. It has no second act.

This is the brunch mimosa moved to a campsite, which mostly means solving two problems: no fresh-squeezed oranges and no refrigerator. Drink powder handles the first — reconstituted juice is thin on its own, but the wine is doing half the work here anyway, so thin is fine. The cooler handles the second, and it is the part people skip. Carbonation holds in cold liquid and escapes from warm liquid, so a split that spent the drive in a hot car will foam out of the cup and taste flat inside a minute.

The ratio is roughly half and half, which is the traditional one and also the forgiving one. Pour the juice first so the wine’s bubbles have something to rise through instead of a dry cup wall. A 375 ml split makes two real drinks and does not leave an open bottle going flat in the cooler overnight — that is the only reason to buy the small size.

Packing

Powder rides in a snack bag or its original packet. The split goes in the cooler on arrival, not in the trunk. Two hard cups beat one wide mug: narrow cups hold the bubbles longer.

Variations

  • Swap the orange powder for a tart cranberry or grapefruit drink mix.
  • No wine? Sparkling water and the same juice powder gives you the same cold fizzy thing without the alcohol.
  • A splash of the juice frozen in a small bottle doubles as a cooler ice pack.
