Ingredients

American blended whiskey 1 1/2 oz decanted into a small plastic flask
Powdered lime juice or True Lime crystals 1 packet stands in for 3/4 oz fresh lime
White sugar 1 tbsp replaces 1 oz simple syrup
Lemon-lime drink powder 1 packet or carry a small can of soda if weight is not an issue
Cold water 150 ml
Salt a pinch

Method

  1. Put the sugar, lime crystals, lemon-lime powder, and salt in a bottle or wide-mouth jar.
  2. Add about 50 ml of cold water and shake until the sugar is gone. Grit at the bottom means keep shaking.
  3. Pour in the whiskey and top with the remaining 100 ml of cold water.
  4. Cap and shake ten seconds. Drink it cold. If you have creek water sitting in the shade, use that.

The original is a shaken bar drink: fresh lime, simple syrup, ice, soda. None of that travels. Lime crystals carry the acid at almost no weight, plain sugar dissolved in a little water does the job of syrup, and lemon-lime powder replaces the soda without a can. What you lose is carbonation. What you keep is the sour-sweet-strong balance, which is the part that matters.

Dissolve the sugar first, in a small amount of water, before anything else goes in. Cold water and a full bottle will not carry sugar into solution and you will end up with a sweet slug at the bottom and a sharp drink on top. The pinch of salt is not for flavor alone; it rounds the acid so the lime crystals read less like a supplement.

Packing

Sugar, lime crystals, soda powder, and salt go in one small bag per drink. Whiskey lives in a labeled flask, never a fuel bottle.

Variations

  • Swap the whiskey for gin and skip the lemon-lime powder for something closer to a gimlet.
  • A dash of hot sauce and extra salt turns it into a rough camp michelada base if you are carrying beer.
  • Leave the whiskey out and it is a workable electrolyte drink.
