Ingredients

Home-canned or store-bought applesauce 1 cup a half-pint jar is exactly right
Rolled oats 3/4 cup
Chia seeds 1 tbsp
Brown sugar 1 tbsp skip it if the sauce was canned sweetened
Cinnamon 1/2 tsp
Salt a pinch
Raisins 1/4 cup
Sunflower seeds 2 tbsp

Method

  1. Open the jar of applesauce and pour off nothing. It is the liquid.
  2. Dump the oat premix into the jar, or dump the applesauce into the bag if the jar is full.
  3. Add 120 ml of cold water and stir until no dry oats are left on the bottom.
  4. Seal it and let it sit at least thirty minutes. Overnight is better.
  5. Stir in the sunflower seeds right before eating so they stay crunchy.

Canning season leaves you with more applesauce than anyone eats at a table, and a half-pint jar happens to hold the right amount of liquid to soften three quarters of a cup of oats. That is the whole idea. No stove, no measuring cup, no pot to scrub.

The chia matters more than it looks. Applesauce alone is thin enough that oats float in it; the chia binds the water and the pectin together so what you get is a thick spoonable cup instead of fruit soup with grain in it. Sunflower seeds go in last because anything crunchy stirred in early is soft by morning.

Packing

Oats, chia, sugar, cinnamon, salt, and raisins go in one bag per serving. Sunflower seeds ride separately. The applesauce jar is glass and heavy, which is why this is a car recipe and not a pack recipe.

Variations

  • Swap the applesauce for canned peaches or pears, drained of half their syrup.
  • A jar of home-canned apple butter makes it thicker and twice as sweet; cut the brown sugar.
  • Add 2 tbsp of powdered coconut milk for fat and body.
