Ingredients
| Milk powder | 1 tbsp | whole milk powder like Nido |
|---|---|---|
| No-bake cheesecake mix | 4 oz | the boxed dessert mix, not pudding |
| Hot chocolate mix | 3 oz | instant cocoa powder or unsweetened instant cocoa |
Method
- At home, combine the milk powder, cheesecake mix, and hot chocolate mix in a resealable bag. Shake it.
- At camp, boil about 280 ml of water.
- Pour the dry mixture into a mug and add the hot water.
- Stir until everything dissolves, about a minute.
- Adjust consistency with more water if you want it thin like hot cocoa, or drink it thick like a mousse. Let it cool slightly before sipping.
Winter backcountry trips already have a stove going for dinner. This repurposes that fire into calories and hydration at once. The no-bake cheesecake mix is shelf-stable and dissolves instantly in hot liquid. Bringing actual cream cheese would be impossible.
Adjust the consistency at camp to your preference: thin it with more water if you want to drink it, keep it thick if you want it to feel substantial. The milk powder adds the fat that makes this actually satisfying rather than just sweet and watery.
Packing
Mix all dry ingredients in a single resealable bag at home. One bag makes one serving.
Variations
- Stir in instant coffee for a mocha version.
- Brew strong herbal tea (fruit flavors work well) and use that instead of plain hot water.
- Make this at home in a Thermos and bring on day trips—it stays warm for hours.
