Ingredients
| Bananas | 2 | ripe, they mash easier |
|---|---|---|
| Canned peaches | 1 can (15 oz) | syrup and all, it replaces most of the liquid |
| Frozen mixed berries | 2 cups | raspberries, blueberries, blackberries; they double as cooler ice |
| Old fashioned rolled oats | 1/2 cup | |
| Plain Greek yogurt | 1 cup | cooler item, single-serve cups keep better than a tub |
| Cold water | 1/2 cup | only if it is too thick to pour |
Method
- The night before, put the oats and the peach syrup in a wide-mouth bottle so the oats soften overnight in the cooler.
- In the morning, mash the bananas and peach slices against the side of the bottle with a spoon or fork until there are no big lumps.
- Add the yogurt and the berries. The berries will still be part frozen, which is the point.
- Cap it and shake for a solid minute. Let it sit five minutes, then shake again once the berries have loosened.
- Thin with cold water a splash at a time until it pours. Drink it straight from the bottle.
This started as a blender recipe, which is fine at a kitchen counter and useless at a picnic table. The fix is mechanical: soak the oats overnight in the peach syrup so they go soft on their own, then mash the soft fruit by hand. Canned peaches do the heavy lifting because the fruit is already cooked down and the syrup is liquid you do not have to carry separately.
Frozen berries earn their weight twice. They keep the cooler cold on the drive in, and they keep the shake cold once it is mixed. The yogurt is the one thing here that needs real refrigeration, so this is a car camping or first morning recipe. If you are walking in, use the powdered milk version and leave the cooler at home.
Packing
Oats go in a small bag inside the bottle so the bottle is the only thing you unpack. Yogurt cups and the frozen berry bag ride at the bottom of the cooler; the berries buy you a few extra hours of cold.
Variations
- Swap the yogurt for 1/3 cup of powdered milk and skip the cooler entirely. Thinner, but it travels.
- A scoop of protein powder pushes this past 25 g per serving.
- No blender means no smooth. If you want smooth, run it in a blender at home and freeze it in bottles.
