Ingredients

Instant rice 2 cups
Freeze-dried hamburger 1/4 cup
Sun-dried tomatoes 1/4 cup
Freeze-dried bell peppers 2 Tbsp crumbled
Dried mushrooms 2 Tbsp crumbled
Dried onion 2 tsp
Granulated sugar 1/2 tsp
Gravy mix 1 packet mushroom, chicken, or brown

Method

  1. At home, bag the freeze-dried beef, sun-dried tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, and onion together in a sandwich bag. Pack the instant rice in a quart freezer bag. Keep the gravy packet separate.
  2. At camp, add 1/2 cup cool water to the beef-vegetable bag, seal it, and set it aside to rehydrate.
  3. Boil 2 cups water and add it to the rice bag. Stir well, seal, and set aside to steep for 15 minutes.
  4. In a pot, bring 1 cup water to a boil and stir in the gravy mix per the packet instructions.
  5. When the beef mixture has finished rehydrating (around 30 minutes), add it to the gravy pot. Simmer for the time specified on the gravy packet, usually 1-2 minutes, stirring often.
  6. Divide the rice between two bowls or cups. Pour the gravy mixture over the rice and serve.

The trick here is parallel timing. Vegetables start rehydrating while water comes to a boil for the rice and gravy. The whole process runs about 30 minutes from first water to plate, but you are not actively cooking for most of that—just waiting for hydration and steeping to work.

Freeze-dried beef and sun-dried tomatoes stay recognizable when rehydrated. The gravy is the structure. Without it you have rice and vegetables. With it you have a plate with body and depth. Mushroom gravy echoes the rehydrated mushrooms and builds the flavor profile.

Packing

At home, organize all freeze-dried vegetables and meat into one sandwich bag. Keep the rice bag and gravy packet separate so nothing gets wet.

Variations

  • Use chicken gravy instead of mushroom for a lighter flavor.
  • Add fresh mushrooms if car-camping with cooler access.
  • Swap sun-dried tomatoes for 1/4 cup freeze-dried corn or peas for different flavor.
