Ingredients
| Freeze-dried sliced strawberries | 1/3 cup | crushes easily, pack it near the top |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried blueberries | 1/4 cup | |
| Pumpkin seeds | 1/4 cup | raw or roasted, salted is better |
| Sunflower seeds | 2 tbsp | |
| Dried carrot or bell pepper pieces | 2 tbsp | cuts the sweetness |
| Salt | a pinch |
Method
- Combine everything in a bag at home and shake.
- Eat by the handful while walking. No stove, no water, no stop.
This is what the freeze-dried fruit aisle is actually good for. Freeze-drying pulls the water out without cooking the fruit, so the berries stay sharp and sweet instead of turning leathery like conventionally dried fruit. They also weigh almost nothing, which is the whole point when the snack bag is the part of the food you eat most often.
The seeds are doing the calorie work. Fruit alone is fast sugar and not much else, and you feel the drop an hour later. Pumpkin and sunflower seeds bring fat and protein, and the dried vegetables and salt keep it from tasting like candy by mile eight. Seeds instead of nuts here on purpose, so the bag stays safe to hand around a group.
Packing
Portion into single-serving zip bags. Push the air out but do not vacuum seal or crush-pack it. Freeze-dried berries are mostly air and turn to powder under pressure, so this bag rides at the top of the pack, not under a bear canister.
Variations
- Add freeze-dried mango or apple for a different sugar profile.
- Two tablespoons of chia or hemp seed adds fat and protein for almost no bulk.
- Stir a serving into hot water with oats and it becomes breakfast.
