Ingredients

Instant ramen 1 block keep the seasoning packet
Instant mashed potato flakes 1/2 cup
Olive oil 1.5 tbsp or butter powder; carried in a small bottle

Method

  1. Boil 500 ml of water. Add the ramen block and cook for 3 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat. Stir in the potato flakes a little at a time until the broth thickens into a paste.
  3. Add the ramen seasoning packet and oil. Mix until the oil distributes through.
  4. Eat straight from the pot. It will thicken further as it cools.

Potato flakes do the real work here. Ramen alone is broth with noodles in it—light and quick to pass through your system. Add the flakes and the whole thing thickens into a dense paste. That thickness is what makes your stomach feel full.

Oil is the point. Without it you are carrying carbohydrate that burns hot and fast. Add fat and you have something that stays with you, something that justifies the ounces in your pack after a long day walking.

Packing

Ramen block, seasoning packet, and potato flakes go in a single quart freezer bag. Carry oil in a small dropper bottle or waterproof container.

Variations

  • Add 2 tablespoons of protein powder for 10 more grams of protein and another 80 calories.
  • Stir in a foil packet of dehydrated vegetables or a can of tuna or chicken for texture and protein.
  • Replace oil with an equal amount of nut butter powder for fat and protein.
