Ingredients

Knorr rice side 1 packet rice medley or any savory flavor
Foil pouch chunk chicken 5 oz pouch, not can, for the weight
Dehydrated mixed vegetables 1/3 cup peas, carrots, corn
Olive oil 1 tbsp
Hot sauce or chili flakes to taste optional

Method

  1. Put the dried vegetables in the pot with 550 ml of water and bring it to a boil. They need the extra minutes more than the rice does.
  2. Add the rice packet and its seasoning. Stir once so nothing welds to the bottom.
  3. Simmer seven minutes, stirring every minute or two. Rice sides scorch fast on a hot canister stove, so run the flame low.
  4. Kill the heat, tear in the chicken pouch, and pour the oil over. Cover for two minutes and let it finish on its own heat.
  5. Stir, add hot sauce, eat from the pot.

This is the assembled dinner most paddlers and backpackers land on eventually: one flavored starch packet doing the seasoning, one protein pouch doing the work. The rice side is cheap, sold everywhere, and already carries enough salt and fat that you do not need to pack spices.

The vegetables go in before the rice on purpose. Dehydrated peas and carrots want a full ten minutes of hot water and the rice only wants seven, so starting them early is the difference between vegetables and gravel. The chicken goes in off the heat because it is already cooked and boiling it just makes it stringy. Oil at the end pushes the calories up to something that counts as dinner.

Packing

Rice packet and dried vegetables share one bag; cut the packet open at home and dump the contents in to save bulk, but keep the cook time written on the bag. The chicken pouch rides on top of the food bag so nothing punctures it.

Variations

  • Swap the chicken for a pouch of hot-and-spicy tuna or pink salmon.
  • A creamy Alfredo pasta side with salmon and dried peas is the same recipe in a different jacket.
  • Two packets and two pouches feed two people in one pot with about 900 ml of water.
