Ingredients

Chocolate sandwich cookies 24 cookies vanilla-filled work the same
White chocolate bark or melting wafers 1 cup bark sets harder in warm air than chips
Candy eyes 48
Halloween sprinkles 2 tbsp optional

Method

  1. Lay the cookies out on a sheet of parchment or a clean pot lid. Do this first, because the chocolate sets fast once it leaves the heat.
  2. Put an inch of water in the pot and bring it to a bare simmer. Kill the flame.
  3. Set a smaller mug or metal cup of the bark in the hot water and stir until it runs smooth. Do not let water get into the chocolate or it will seize into paste.
  4. Spoon the melted bark into a corner of a small zip bag, snip a tiny hole, and run thin lines back and forth across each cookie.
  5. Press two candy eyes into the wet chocolate on each one. Sprinkles go on now or not at all.
  6. Give them ten minutes in the shade to firm up. In hot weather set the parchment on a cold rock or in a stream-chilled pot.

This is a party treat, not backcountry food, so the adaptation is mostly about heat management. There is no microwave and no double boiler, so the pot becomes the water bath: boil, cut the flame, and let residual heat do the melting. White chocolate scorches above about 110 F, and a stove left running under it will turn it grainy in under a minute.

Bark rather than chips matters here. Melting wafers carry more stabilizer, so they set firm at camp temperatures instead of staying tacky and gluing the container shut. The cookies are structural — they hold the chocolate and the eyes, and they are the reason this survives a cooler-free drive in the trunk.

Packing

Cookies travel in a rigid container or they arrive as crumbs. Bark, eyes, and sprinkles each get their own small bag. Carry one zip bag for piping and one for trash.

Variations

  • No stove: set the bag of bark in a black nalgene in direct sun for an hour and pipe from there.
  • Peanut butter cups chopped into the chocolate if nut allergies are not a concern.
  • Pretzel sticks striped the same way stretch one cup of bark across twice the servings.
