Ingredients

Vanilla whey protein powder 2 scoops, about 50 g
Powdered whole milk 2 tbsp replaces the milk the original blends in
Rolled oats 1 tbsp ground fine at home
Maple sugar or brown sugar 1 tsp dry stand-in for maple syrup
Cinnamon 1/4 tsp
Nutmeg 1/4 tsp
Raisins 1 tbsp
Salt a pinch

Method

  1. Pour 250 ml of cold water into the bottle first, then add the powder bag. Powder on top of water clumps less than water on top of powder.
  2. Cap it and shake for twenty seconds. Keep shaking past the point it looks mixed; the oat flour settles fast.
  3. Drop the raisins in and drink. They sink, so tip the bottle back at the end.
  4. In cold weather use water off a warm bottle, not snowmelt, or the milk powder stays gritty.

The original is a blender drink built on a branded shake mix and liquid maple syrup, neither of which belongs in a pack. Generic vanilla protein powder plus dry whole milk gets the same body, and maple or brown sugar carries the flavor without a sticky bottle. Grinding the oats at home is the part that matters: whole rolled oats will not soften in cold water inside a shaker, so they end up as wet flecks. Ground fine, they thicken the drink and add the chew the name promises.

Raisins go in at the end rather than in the mix. Packed with the powder they draw moisture and clump the whole bag into a brick over a few days. This is a recovery drink more than a meal: about 26 g of protein and enough sugar to start refilling what a long climb took out, at roughly two ounces of carried weight.

Packing

Everything dry except the raisins goes in one snack bag per serving. Raisins ride in their own bag so they do not glue the powder together. A wide-mouth bottle with a screw lid works better than a soft flask.

Variations

  • Swap the whey for a plant protein and skip the milk powder to make it dairy-free.
  • A teaspoon of instant coffee turns it into breakfast and caffeine in one bottle.
  • Use certified gluten-free oats if that matters to you.
