Oil-Boosted Freeze-Dried Dinner

Store-bought freeze-dried meals jump from light to filling when you add oil, spices, and tortillas.

Calorie and protein figures are my own estimates, good enough for planning a food bag and not meant as precise nutrition data.

Ingredients

Freeze-dried meal base 1 serving any commercial freeze-dried entree
Olive oil 1 tbsp carried in a 2-4 oz screw-top bottle
Tortillas 2 flour tortillas last better than alternatives
Salt and spices to taste habanero flakes or black pepper work well

Method

  1. Boil 500 ml of water.
  2. Stir in the freeze-dried meal base, breaking it up as it hydrates.
  3. Let it sit for about 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fully rehydrated.
  4. Drizzle in the olive oil and stir it through the meal.
  5. Taste and add salt and spices.
  6. Scoop spoonfuls into a tortilla as you eat, or tear the tortilla over the pot and stir it in.

The advertised serving sizes on freeze-dried meals are lies told by people who eat a 300-calorie dinner. Oil solves this: one tablespoon adds 120 calories and makes the whole thing taste less like cardboard. Tortillas aren’t a side; they’re structure, calories, and a way to turn ‘meal from a bag’ into an actual dinner.

This setup costs almost nothing beyond what you’d carry anyway. Pack oil in small bottles so you control how much goes on a given trip. Spices are optional but worth the grams—a commercial meal seasoned for everyone tastes like it was seasoned for no one.

Packing

The freeze-dried meal and spices go in a quart bag. Oil travels in its own small screw-top bottle so it doesn't leak onto everything. Tortillas roll up flat and go in the bag with the meal.

Variations

  • A spoonful of hot sauce or sriracha powder boosts flavor without adding much weight.
  • Pack powdered butter or coconut milk instead of oil if you prefer a different fat.
