Ingredients
| Hard salami | 3 oz | a whole stick, not pre-sliced |
|---|---|---|
| Hard cheese | 2 oz | aged gouda or parmesan, both survive a warm pack |
| Rye crispbread or hard crackers | 4 pieces | |
| Mustard packets | 2 | |
| Dried apple rings | 1/4 cup | |
| Olive oil | 1 tbsp | dropper bottle, optional but it is the cheapest calorie you carry |
| Salt and cracked pepper | a pinch each |
Method
- Find a flat rock or a pack lid. Slicing on your knee is how people end trips early.
- Cut the salami into coins about as thick as a coin. Cut the cheese into slabs.
- Lay salami and cheese on the crispbread, squeeze mustard over, and press a second cracker on top if you want it to travel in hand.
- Drizzle the oil over the cheese slabs you eat loose, then salt and pepper them.
- Eat the apple rings last. They clean the fat off your teeth better than water does.
This is a knife lunch. Everything in it arrives whole and gets cut at the stop, which is why it holds up: a salami stick and a cheese wedge keep far longer than sliced versions, because the cut surface is where things go wrong. Nothing here needs heat, water, or a fridge, so it works on a break where you do not want to unpack the stove.
The crispbread carries the fat rather than adding much itself. The oil and cheese do the calorie work, mustard cuts the grease, and dried apple resets your mouth at the end. Cut on something flat, not on your leg.
Packing
Salami and cheese go in one bag, crackers in a rigid container or they arrive as crumbs. Mustard packets live in a lid pocket so you are not digging.
Variations
- Swap salami for a foil pouch of tuna or chicken if you want the fat lower and the protein higher.
- A packet of hot sauce instead of mustard changes the whole lunch for a gram.
- Add a tortilla and roll the whole thing up if crackers keep breaking on you.
