Ingredients
| Freeze-dried or dehydrated noodles | 1 cup | |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried pulled pork | 1/4 cup | |
| Dried diced carrots | 1/4 cup | |
| Butter powder | 1 Tbsp | |
| Sour cream powder | 1 Tbsp | |
| Parmesan cheese powder | 1 Tbsp | or shelf-stable hard cheese |
| Olive oil | 1 Tbsp | or 1 foil packet |
Method
- Bring 1.25 cups of water and 1 Tbsp of oil to a boil.
- Add the noodles, pork, carrots, butter powder, sour cream powder, and parmesan. Stir well and remove from heat.
- Cover and let sit 15 minutes. Everything rehydrates in the residual heat.
- Stir and eat. The sour cream powder thickens it slightly and the butter powder adds richness.
Freeze-dried pork is one of the few dehydrated proteins that tastes like actual meat. The noodles and vegetables rehydrate completely in boiling water and the residual heat, with no active cooking required. Butter and sour cream powders thicken the broth and carry fat through the noodles so it isn’t thin broth with noodles floating in it.
Pack it all together at home so at camp you are dumping one bag into boiling water. The fifteen-minute sit is completely passive and buys you time to get the stove organized and start water for the next pot. The meal is protein-dense without tasting like protein powder.
Packing
Mix the noodles, pork, carrots, and powders into a quart freezer bag at home. Carry oil in a dropper bottle or small foil packet—it greases everything else if packed together.
Variations
- Use freezer bag cooking with an insulated cozy instead of a pot. Pour boiling water into the sealed bag in the cozy and let sit 15 minutes.
- Add freeze-dried vegetables like peas or corn if you have them on hand.
