Ingredients

Instant rice 1/2 cup
Freeze-dried pulled pork 1/4 cup
Freeze-dried corn 1/4 cup
Freeze-dried pepperjack or jack cheese 2 Tbsp
Dry ranch dressing mix 2 tsp
Olive oil 1 Tbsp carry in a single packet or dropper bottle

Method

  1. Boil 1 cup of water.
  2. Place your freezer bag of pre-mixed dry ingredients into an insulated cozy.
  3. Stir the oil into the boiling water, then pour the hot water and oil into the sealed bag.
  4. Seal the bag tightly and let it sit undisturbed for 15 minutes until the rice is tender.
  5. Open, stir, and eat from the bag with a spoon.

Instant rice done right is about fat, protein, and flavor. This recipe stacks all three. The freeze-dried pulled pork contributes serious protein without weight, the oil and cheese deliver calories and satisfaction, and the ranch mix brings it all together without requiring fresh ingredients. Everything pre-packs into one bag.

The bag method asks only for boiling water and a cozy to retain heat—no pots to wash, just a spoon. The rice rehydrates in 15 minutes while you handle other camp tasks. If you lack a cozy, the one-pot version works just as well; you’ll just have dishes to clean. Corn is swappable for freeze-dried peppers or peas, and any hard cheese will work instead of pepperjack.

Packing

Combine the rice, freeze-dried pork, corn, cheese, and ranch mix into a quart freezer bag at home. Carry the oil in a single-serving packet or small dropper bottle. Bring an insulated cozy or soup sleeve to retain heat. At camp, boil water, stir in the oil, pour into the sealed bag in the cozy, and wait.

Variations

  • One-pot method: Add water and oil to a pot, bring to boil, add all dry ingredients, remove from heat, cover, and let sit 8 minutes.
  • Substitute freeze-dried peppers, peas, or onions for the corn.
  • Use any hard cheese in place of pepperjack.
