Ingredients

Boxed stuffing mix 1 box (6 oz) seasoning packet included
Chicken 2 pouches (5 oz each) foil pouch, no draining
Butter or ghee 4 tbsp ghee keeps for days without a cooler
Dried onion flakes 1 tbsp
Salt and black pepper to taste

Method

  1. Boil 350 ml of water in the pot. Drop in the butter and the onion flakes and let them melt.
  2. Kill the heat. Dump in the stuffing mix and its seasoning, stir once, and put the lid on.
  3. Wait five minutes without touching it. The cubes need that time to take up the water.
  4. Fork in the chicken, breaking up the big pieces. Salt and pepper, then eat straight from the pot.

The source for this was a gag recipe from a hunting forum, the kind where you stuff a bird with popcorn and wait for it to blow the oven door open. The three real ingredients underneath it, though, are sound: chicken, butter, bread stuffing. That is a roast dinner, and it packs down to a box and two pouches.

Nothing here is baked. Stuffing mix is already dried bread, so it rehydrates off the heat in about five minutes and does not need an oven at all. The butter matters more than it looks: without it the mix is dry and salty, and it is where most of the calories in the pot come from. Pouched chicken goes in last because it is already cooked and will shred to nothing if you stir it over a flame.

Packing

Crush the stuffing box and carry the bag inside it. Butter goes in a screw-top jar; ghee if it will be warm. Chicken pouches ride flat against the back panel.

Variations

  • A handful of dried cranberries and a spoon of gravy powder makes it read as Thanksgiving.
  • Swap the chicken for a foil pouch of salmon, or leave it out and add a second pouch of stuffing.
