Ingredients
| Ground venison | 1 lb | frozen solid at home, it thaws in the cooler by day two |
|---|---|---|
| Pork breakfast sausage | 1 lb | the fat venison does not have |
| Tomato paste | 4 tbsp | tube, not can, so leftovers reseal |
| Dried mushrooms | 1 oz | stands in for 8 oz fresh |
| Freeze-dried spinach | 1/2 cup | or skip it and carry nothing |
| Dried onion flakes | 1/4 cup | |
| Garlic | 3 cloves | or 1 tsp granulated |
| Italian herb blend | 1 tbsp | |
| Salt | 1 tsp | |
| White vinegar | 1 tsp | carried in a dropper bottle |
| Shredded Italian cheese blend | 6 oz | low-moisture, keeps in the cooler |
| Water | 1 cup |
Method
- Brown the sausage in a dry skillet over the fire or stove. The fat it renders is your cooking oil for the venison.

Packing
Meat goes in the cooler frozen, doubled in zip bags. Dried mushrooms, spinach, onion, and the herb-salt mix ride together in one bag. Cheese and tomato paste in the cooler with the meat.
Variations
- Spoon it over instant mashed potatoes or rice if nobody at the table cares about carbs.
- Swap the sausage for bacon ends and add a spoonful of fat back to the pan.
