Ingredients

Whole blanched almonds 1 cup
Hazelnuts 1 cup
Smoked almonds 2 cups
Butter 2 tablespoons or coconut oil
Hot sauce 1 tablespoon
Grill seasoning 1 tablespoon Montreal Steak Seasoning or equivalent
Ground cumin 1.5 teaspoons
Poppy seeds 1 teaspoon
Sesame seeds 1 tablespoon

Method

  1. Melt butter with hot sauce, grill seasoning, and cumin in a small pot over medium heat.
  2. Add blanched almonds and hazelnuts. Toast, stirring often, until golden and fragrant, about 7 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat. Add smoked almonds and toss to coat with the spiced butter.
  4. Stir in poppy and sesame seeds. Spread on foil to cool if you have time.

The butter carries the spices evenly through the nuts and adds the calories that make this a meal snack. Smoked almonds are already cooked, so you are just warming everything to help the seasonings stick. Skip the butter and hot sauce if you want to cut weight, and toast everything briefly in a dry pot instead. The cumin and seeds carry enough flavor.

Buy pre-roasted blanched almonds and hazelnuts to avoid the roasting step entirely. Toss cold with the spices for a no-cook version that still tastes intentional.

Packing

Pack all nuts together in a gallon freezer bag. Pre-measure spices into a small pouch. Carry butter in a small plastic container or wrap a few tablespoons in foil.

Variations

  • Use walnuts or pecans in place of hazelnuts.
  • Add cayenne for heat. Omit the hot sauce for a milder flavor.
  • Make this at home and carry as a ready-to-eat snack with no camp cooking required.
