Ingredients
| Dried steak strips | 1.5 oz | jerky or home-dehydrated beef slices |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-to-eat rice packet | 1 packet (8.5 oz) | microwaveable packets; just tear and add |
| Ghee or oil | 1.5 tbsp | carried in a small dropper bottle |
| Sesame oil | 0.5 tsp | optional |
| Dried garlic | 1 tsp | powder or minced |
| Soy sauce | 1 tbsp | use tamari if you need gluten-free |
Method
- Heat the ghee or oil in your pot over medium-high heat.
- Break the steak strips into small pieces and add them to the hot fat. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they brown at the edges.
- Tear open the rice packet and pour it in, breaking apart any clumps with your spoon.
- Stir in the garlic and cook for 3-4 minutes more, tossing occasionally, until the rice is heated through and starting to crisp.
- Drizzle with sesame oil and soy sauce. Toss and serve hot.
Ready-to-eat rice packets were invented for kitchen convenience, but they work just as well at camp—lighter than most freeze-dried meals and actually tasting like rice instead of seasoned air. Dried steak matters more than it seems. Cold jerky is rubbery. Hot jerky crisping in a pot of oil is something else. That sizzle in the pan is your actual dinner.
At 600 calories, this will not carry you through a long day of walking. But for a high camp with tomorrow’s mileage already behind you, or a weekend car-camping trip where weight is not the constraint, it is the kind of meal that reminds you why you bothered to cook at all.
Packing

Variations
- Dehydrated peas or carrots mixed in during the last minute of cooking.
