Ingredients
| Old-fashioned rolled oats | 1/2 cup | pulsed in a blender at home |
|---|---|---|
| Powdered milk | 1/4 cup | |
| Plain TVP, small granules | 2 tbsp | |
| Ground flax seed | 1 tbsp | |
| Wheat germ | 1 tbsp | |
| Brown sugar | 2 tbsp | |
| Raisins | 1 tbsp |
Method
- At home, pulse the oats a few times in a blender until they are roughly broken up, not flour.
- Combine everything dry in a quart freezer bag and squeeze the air out.
- In camp, bring 240 ml of water to a boil and pour it into the bag.
- Stir it through, seal the bag, and set it inside a cozy or a spare sock for five minutes.
- Stir again and eat straight from the bag. Add a splash more water if it tightened up too far.
The TVP is the point. Plain oatmeal is fast sugar and quits on you an hour down the trail; two tablespoons of soy protein pushes this to about 20 grams and changes how long it lasts. It has no flavor of its own, so the brown sugar and raisins still run the show.
Breaking up the oats at home matters more than it sounds. Whole rolled oats need a real simmer to soften; chopped ones hydrate off boiling water alone, which is what makes this a pour-and-wait breakfast instead of a pot to scrub. The flax and wheat germ thicken it as it sits, so give it the full five minutes before deciding it needs more water.
Packing
One bag per morning, mixed at home. Ground flax goes rancid faster than the rest, so mix bags close to the trip and keep spare flax in the freezer between trips.
Variations
- Swap the powdered milk for coconut, soy, or rice milk powder and it goes vegan.
- A spoonful of peanut butter powder adds fat and protein, but drops the nut-free claim.
- Chopped dates or dried apple in place of raisins.
