Ingredients

Ground beef 1/2 lb browned at home and chilled keeps it a two-minute job in camp
Taco seasoning 1 packet
Corn chips 1 family-size bag Fritos or any thick-cut corn chip
Water 2 tbsp only if using a seasoning packet that asks for it
Hot sauce to taste optional

Method

  1. Brown the beef in a skillet over the stove or a grate until no pink is left. If it came precooked from home, just heat it through.
  2. Pour off the worst of the fat if there is a lot of it. Some fat helps the seasoning stick.
  3. Stir in the taco seasoning and a splash of water. Cook another minute until it coats the meat instead of sitting on top.
  4. Open the chip bag, crush it once from the outside, and spoon the beef in.
  5. Stir with a long spoon and eat straight from the bag.

This is a chip bag doing the work of a bowl. The chips are sturdy enough to hold hot meat without collapsing, and eating out of the bag means the only thing to wash is the skillet and a spoon.

The seasoning step matters more than it looks. Cooking the spice mix into the fat with a splash of water gives you a coating that clings to the beef, so the flavor ends up on the meat rather than in the bottom of the bag. Beef browned at home and packed cold cuts camp time to about two minutes, but it needs cooler space — that is the one thing here that will not sit out.

Packing

Beef travels precooked in a sealed bag or container in the cooler. Seasoning goes in your dry box. Chips ride on top of the load or they arrive as dust.

Variations

  • Snack-size chip bags turn one skillet into individual servings and no shared spoon.
  • Cooked lentils or a pouch of seasoned beans in place of the beef makes it meat-free and cooler-free.
  • Shelf-stable shredded cheese or a squeeze packet of taco sauce on top if you have it.
