Ingredients

uBu Hiker's Hummus 1 serving from a 2-serving pouch any flavor except Everything Bagel if avoiding sesame
Shelf-stable crackers 1.5 oz oil-based varieties travel better than cheese-based

Method

  1. Pour cold water into the hummus pouch or a small container, stirring as you add the water.
  2. Let it sit for 15 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until the hummus reaches a dippable consistency.
  3. Serve with crackers for dipping.

Freeze-dried hummus travels without a cooler, solving a real backpacking problem: you want something that tastes like actual food, not another energy bar, and you need it shelf-stable for weeks. Adding water and waiting fifteen minutes delivers on both counts.

The rustic texture—thicker than commercial hummus—means it won’t separate or get slimy, and the lack of preservatives is a bonus if you’re sensitive to them. Pair it with whatever crackers you’ve packed and call it lunch.

Packing

The hummus pouch is shelf-stable and ready to pack. Keep crackers separate in a zip-lock bag to avoid crushing.

Variations

  • Use any of the six available flavors to vary the snack.
  • Spread the rehydrated hummus on flatbread or wraps if you're carrying them.
  • Add dried vegetables or nuts if available—the hummus will bind them together.
