Two-Packet Camp Coffee

Two servings of instant in one mug of water. Strong enough to matter, simple enough to make half asleep.

Ingredients

Instant coffee packets 2 packets microground instant like Starbucks Via, or one of those plus one cheap instant
Water 2 cups

Method

  1. Boil 2 cups of water. An integrated canister stove does this in about two minutes.
  2. Pour the water into an insulated mug, not a metal cup.
  3. Tear in both packets and stir until no grit is left on the bottom.
  4. Drink it slowly while you decide what breakfast is. Make a second cup after you eat and carry the rest with you.

Two packets in one mug is the whole idea. A single packet in 2 cups of water is thin, and doubling the coffee instead of halving the water means you get a full mug that stays hot long enough to actually finish.

Instant is the trail-worthy choice because there is nothing to clean and nothing to pack out. A press or a drip cone makes better coffee, but both leave you with wet grounds at 7 a.m. The mug matters more than the method: insulated plastic or double-wall steel holds heat while you wander around camp, which is the point of the ritual.

Packing

Packets live in the breakfast bag with the stove bag next to it, so morning is two grabs and no searching. An insulated plastic or double-wall mug is the real gear decision here: a bare metal cup burns your mouth at first and goes cold before you finish.

Variations

  • One good instant packet plus one budget packet gets most of the flavor at half the cost.
  • A spoon of powdered milk and sugar stirred in makes it closer to a cappuccino without carrying dairy.
  • Same water, same mug, with tea bags instead.
