Ingredients

Teddy Graham snack pack 1 bag (1 oz) any small bag of graham cookies works
Milk chocolate bar 1/3 of a standard bar broken into pieces before the trip
Marshmallows 2 regular size

Method

  1. Squeeze the unopened cookie bag until the contents are coarse crumbs. Do not pulverize it or you get sand.
  2. Open the bag and roll the top edge down twice so it stands up on its own.
  3. Toast the marshmallows over coals until they are brown and slumping. Flame gives you carbon, coals give you the inside.
  4. Hold the marshmallows over the open bag and pull the stick out through the bag wall. The crumbs strip them off your skewer.
  5. Drop the chocolate on top, stir once with a spoon, and eat out of the bag while the marshmallow is still soft enough to melt it.

The whole point is that the bag is the bowl. Crushed graham cookies coat a hot marshmallow the way a cracker sandwich never quite does, and they also do the work of pulling it off the roasting stick, which is the part of a normal s’more that ends up on someone’s hands.

Order matters. Marshmallow first, chocolate second, because the residual heat is what melts the chocolate. Reverse it and you get a cold bar sitting on the bottom of the bag. Everything here is shelf-stable, though the chocolate will soften above roughly 85F and set again into a lumpier shape. That costs nothing but looks.

Packing

Chocolate goes in the middle of the pack where it stays coolest, and inside a bag in case it does not. Marshmallows compress but do not crush, so they can fill dead space in a food bag.

Variations

  • Swap in dark chocolate or a peanut butter cup if milk chocolate is too sweet after a long day.
  • Mini marshmallows melt faster and skip the skewer entirely if you have a mug you can warm them in.
  • A pinch of instant coffee in the crumbs cuts the sugar.
